There are many ways for men in Christchurch to find support, connection, and opportunities for personal growth. Whether you're seeking counselling, parenting support, help with anger or relationship concerns, or a chance to connect with your peers, there is a service that can help. Most of the below services are free of charge. For those that aren’t, be sure to ask about funding options.

General Support

Canterbury Men’s Centre offers low-cost counselling for men and couples, as well as peer support for survivors of sexual abuse.

The Salvation Army in Christchurch addresses barriers faced by men through its Positive Lifestyle Programme. The programme brings men together to share their experiences while developing valuable life skills that support positive change.

The Linwood Resource Centre and Community Gardens hosts a Menz Shed, a space for men of all ability levels to connect, learn, teach, and laugh while working on personal- or community-focused woodworking projects.

So Fresh is available to anyone who identifies as a man and is a client of Work and Income. It is all about breaking barriers and building confidence. Their services include provision of professional clothing, grooming services, and preparation for life’s big moments such as job interviews.

The Yarns Men offers peer support and connection in Christchurch and across Aotearoa New Zealand for working aged men, supporting their belief that every man should feel connected, valued, and heard. 

Mates in Construction is an Auckland-based charitable organisation that operates a nationwide helpline aimed at preventing self-harm and suicide among men in the construction industry. It also provides workplace and industry training to support organisations and promote mental wellbeing.

Support for Fathers

Kids Need Dads holds regular meetings to support fathers with the day-to-day challenges of parenting. Issues they can help with include mediation, Family Court matters, anger management, and parenting courses.

Presbyterian Support offers the Dads Tuning into Kids programme, which provides fathers with information to support a greater understanding of their tamariki's developmental needs and emotional experiences, as well as information about their influence on this development.

Neighbourhood Trust hosts Kiwi Dads Christchurch, which aims to inspire, encourage, and inform fathers in their parental roles. The Trust also offers a parenting course for dads called Game On!.

Relationship and Violence Prevention Support

If you are worried about using violence or controlling behaviours, or are concerned that you may do so, support is available. Specialist programmes can help you develop healthier ways of managing emotions, resolving conflict, and building safe, respectful relationships with your partner, children, and whānau.
