Educational Support for Adults in Ōtautahi Christchurch
Adults in Christchurch who want to start or continue their educational or training journeys may be eligible for government funding. This will depend upon your employment situation and the course you choose.
If concerns about literacy, language, or communication skills are making it difficult to explore these options, free support is also available to help you grow in those areas.
📌Please note: Exercise caution when choosing an education provider. Before enrolling, prospective students should verify that a provider and its qualifications are recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority or another relevant regulatory body. Doing so can help ensure that a qualification meets established standards and is recognised by employers and educational institutions.
Ministry of Social Development
Work and Income can help you gain new skills and pursue qualifications to help you enter the workforce. They can even assist with bills while you train or study.
If you are receiving a main benefit (like Jobseeker Support or Sole Parent Support) and studying for up to 12 months, the Training Incentive Allowance can help cover tuition, books, transport, and childcare.
Work and Income’s Course Participation Assistance provides up to $1,000 over 52 weeks to help cover fees, equipment, and transport for short-term training (less than 12 weeks).
StudyLink offers loans and student allowances for full-time and some part-time tertiary study. StudyLink supports learners from ages 18 to 65, though the level of support changes relative to age.
